Test Driven Development

Kent Beck

Paperback: 240 pages

Publisher: Addison Wesley; 1 edition (8 Nov 2002)

Language English

ISBN-10: 0321146530

ISBN-13: 978-0321146533

It is an extremely good practice to develop software using a test driven approach.  This introduction to the practice is ideal.  The whole book centres around a very specific working example.

Domain-driven Design: Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software

Eric Evans

Hardcover: 560 pages

Publisher: Addison Wesley; 1 edition (20 Aug 2003)

Language English

ISBN-10: 0321125215

ISBN-13: 978-0321125217

Good domain knowledge on any project is key.  Knowing how to implement this domain knowledge is very important that is why I suggest this book.

Release It!: Design and Deploy Production-Ready Software (Pragmatic Programmers)

MT Nygard

Paperback: 326 pages

Publisher: Pragma; 1 edition (20 April 2007)

Language English

ISBN-10: 0978739213

ISBN-13: 978-0978739218

This is probably the best book I have read to date.  Just because software is functional it does not mean it is ready for production.  Reading this book highlights a lot of production items that can be quite easily overlooked.  It is vital to have an appreciation of what can happen in production.

Expert One-on-one J2EE Design and Development (Programmer to Programmer)

Rod Johnson

Paperback: 768 pages

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons; New edition edition (23 Oct 2002)

Language English

ISBN-10: 0764543857

ISBN-13: 978-0764543852

This is a good book by Rod Johnson.  Yes it is perhaps quite dated now, but it is essential reading before Pro Spring.  The author provides a very rounded, well balanced view on Java enterprise technology.

Pro Spring X

Jan Machacek, Aleksa Vukotic, Anirvan Chakraborty, Jessica Ditt

Paperback: 999 pages

Language English

ISBN-10: 1430218452

ISBN-13: 978-1430218456

Anyone with some form of common sense in Java development will have either read this from cover to cover or will use it as a desktop reference.

Java Performance Tuning

Jack Shirazi

Language English

ISBN-10: 0596003773

ISBN-13: 978-0596003777

Understanding some of the programming language / runtime fundamentals can provide opportunity to create much better code.  Anyone to have read a book of this type will indicate a better depth of knowledge.

JUnit in Action

Vincent Massol

Paperback: 384 pages

Publisher: Manning Publications; 1 edition (13 Nov 2003)

ISBN-10: 1930110995

ISBN-13: 978-1930110991

It is relatively easy to write a unit test, but to write good tests, get good test coverage and write good fixtures requires a good reference book.

Pro Java EE 5 Performance Management & Optimization

Steven Haines

Language English

ISBN-10: 1590596102

ISBN-13: 978-1590596104

A good understanding of the deployment environment is key especially to optimise a deployed product/solution in production.  This sort of reference book is key for this.

Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship

Robert C. Martin

Paperback: 464 pages

Publisher: Prentice Hall; 1 edition (1 Aug 2008)

Language English

ISBN-10: 0132350882

ISBN-13: 978-0132350884

A must read especially if it means any code implemented is of a much higher quality.

The Web Application Hacker's Handbook: Discovering and Exploiting Security Flaws

Dafydd Stuttard, Marcus Pinto

Paperback: 768 pages

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons (19 Oct 2007)

Language English

ISBN-10: 0470170778

ISBN-13: 978-0470170779

This is a specialised book recommended because it potentially shows another aspect to software engineering.  Its great being able to implement security in a login handler for example, but is there any chance it can be bypassed?  A developer that tries to ensure that it cannot be bypassed should prove to be a bit more experienced and have a wider appreciation of the job at hand.

At least one specialised database book should have been read or at least used for reference.  It’s all well writing complex SQL, but unless you can get the best from the chosen database technology there may be no need to be that clever with SQL statements alone.
